The rules for Tennis was first established by a British army personnel Walter Clopton Wingfield. People started calling it Lawn Tennis from 1873. Lawn tennis doesn’t consist of so many rules like other games. But the game is neither so easy. There are some critical rules which should be followed during the play. The conventional game has different aspects of playing. There are different categories also in the case of the players who are playing the game.

The division according to the category are:-

  • Singles:

Singles game is played between two individuals. It is a one to one game. The singles sidelines are maintained while playing this.

  • Doubles:

It is played with wide court dimensions among four people, two at each side and they have to be in a common gender. It can be an all-men game or all-women game. The players switch positions after some times in the game.

The rules of Lawn Tennis are relatively easier than the other sports. The game demands main three things from the players, finesse, dexterity and adroitness. One should be very focused throughout the game to achieve the goal and also has to be hardworking and consistent.

The other rules of the game: –

  • Serving Rule:

A toss or a racquet spin is done to choose the player at the serving end and the receiving end. And thus the game starts.

  • Position Arrangement:

The player who serves is called the server and the player who receives from the other side is called the receiver.

  • Service:

Service is the part where the game starts by hitting the ball for the first time by the racquet and served to the other player from one side of the court by the opponent player. Each serve has a point for the player.  It is done tossing the ball in the air and hitting it to send it to the opposite side of the court where the other player is standing.

There are some crucial rules of serving which should be followed by the server for sure.

  • The feet of the player of the serving end has to be behind the baseline and any contact should not be there.
  • The server’s position is generally at the centre point of the right side of the baseline.
  • The serving should be diagonal across the net. It has to be on the left side of the server’s perspective.
  • The server cannot serve until the receiver is ready and vice versa.
  • A service will be legal only if the ball crosses the net without touching the net or land. If the ball fall on the ground touching the net, then the server gets another chance to serve. This is called a ‘Let’ or ‘Net’. If this thing happens twice, then the server won’t get another chance and he/she will lose a point.
  • If a player misses the ball at the time of serving or tossing, it will be considered as a faulty service.
  • If a receiver does not let the ball to bounce before hitting back, that will be a point losing service for the person.
  • The scoring system is a bit complex in this game. The match consists of several sets, game sand points. The player who wins the more number of sets, he/she will win the game. Each sets has 6 games.
  • The beginning score of a Lawn tennis game is ‘Love’ or ‘zero’. Then the score goes to 15, 30, 40 etc. Then the 40-all is termed as ‘Deuce’ and the next point scored is called ‘Advantage’.

So this was the main rules of Tennis which is to be adhered to while playing.
